Veneers in Kondapur, Hyderabad

A veneer is a thin shell that covers the front of a tooth. It can hide a chip, a stain that whitening cannot lift, a small gap or an uneven shape, and the tooth keeps its own root and most of its own structure.

Elite Dental Clinic is a dental clinic in Kondapur, Hyderabad. This page is medically reviewed by Dr. Revathi Indukuri, an endodontist whose practice includes cosmetic dentistry. It explains how veneers in Kondapur work, the two types, the risks and how your plan is set.

Quick answer

A veneer is a custom-made, tooth-coloured shell bonded to the front of a tooth to hide chips, stains, gaps or an uneven shape. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, veneers are planned after an evaluation, and the enamel removed for a porcelain veneer cannot be put back.

01 Overview

What are dental veneers and what can they change?

Dental veneers are custom-made, natural-looking coverings for your teeth. They are used for teeth that are chipped, stained, crooked or gapped.1 A veneer changes the colour, the shape and the apparent size of the front of a tooth.

There are two main types. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory, are strong and durable, and are bonded to the tooth. Composite veneers are made from tooth-coloured filling material, are shaped on the tooth in the chair, are easier to repair and are less stain-resistant.1

Veneers are not the first step for every cosmetic concern. A stain may respond to teeth whitening, a small chip to dental bonding and a heavily damaged tooth may need a crown. Crowns can also cover teeth that are discoloured or misshapen.3

For a porcelain veneer, a thin layer of enamel is taken off the front of the tooth to make room. The American Dental Association notes that the treatment is not reversible because enamel is removed.1 That is the reason to plan the smile first.

In short, a veneer is a thin shell that changes the look of a front tooth, and the enamel taken for it does not grow back.

Veneers are sometimes called laminates. They are used for stained teeth that do not respond to whitening, or for a chipped tooth.

02 Candidacy

Who are veneers suitable for in Kondapur?

Veneers suit healthy front teeth that need a change in look. A dentist decides after an examination and an X-ray. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Usually suits

  • Chipped, worn or uneven edges on the front teeth
  • Stains that whitening has not lifted, or deep stains that may not respond to bleach
  • Small gaps, or teeth that look too short, too narrow or misshapen
  • Healthy gums and no untreated decay, with enough enamel to bond to

Needs caution or a different plan

  • Clenching or grinding the teeth, or a deep overbite, which can break veneers1
  • Existing dental disease, which must be treated first1
  • Crowded or crooked teeth that would be moved more gently with braces or aligners
  • Teeth with large fillings or little enamel, where a crown may be the better choice

Healthy gums and enamel, and a bite that is not under heavy strain, matter more than the look you want.

03 Options

Which type of veneer fits your teeth in Kondapur?

The choice depends on the problem, the number of teeth and how you bite. Both types are bonded to the front of the tooth.

Porcelain veneers

Made in a laboratory after the tooth is shaped and an impression or 3D scan is taken. A temporary veneer may be placed while the laboratory works, and the final veneer is bonded at a later visit.1

2 or more visits

Composite veneers

Built up and shaped on the tooth from tooth-coloured filling material, set with a light and polished. Usually finished in one visit, and easier to repair, but they stain more easily.1

Usually 1 visit

Bonding, whitening or a crown instead

For a small chip, see dental bonding. For colour alone, see teeth whitening. For a badly damaged tooth, see dental crowns.

Chosen by the problem

Veneers are often one part of a wider plan. See smile designing and smile makeover, and gum contouring if the gum line is uneven.

04 Procedure

How are veneers made and fitted, step by step?

Porcelain veneers usually need two or more visits, and composite veneers are usually done in one.1 You are told the plan for your teeth at the first visit.

The smile is planned before any enamel is removed.

  1. Examination and smile planning for veneers

The dentist asks what you want to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite and takes photos and X-rays. The look is planned with you, and a mockup may be shown first, see smile designing.

  2. Preparing the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel

The tooth is numbed if needed and a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front. This cannot be reversed.1 Disease is treated before any veneers are made.1

  3. Impression or 3D scan

An impression or a 3D scan of the prepared teeth is taken. For porcelain veneers it goes to a laboratory, where the shells are made.1

  4. Fitting a temporary veneer

A temporary veneer may be placed while the porcelain veneer is made.1 It protects the tooth and lets you check the shape, but it is not as strong as the final veneer.

  5. Bonding the veneer to the tooth

The veneer is tried on to check the colour and the fit, and then it is bonded to the tooth. For composite veneers, the material is built up, shaped, set with a special light and polished at the same visit.1

  6. Checking the bite and aftercare for veneers

Your bite is checked so that the veneers are not hit too hard when you chew. You are shown how to clean them, and a review visit follows.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of veneers in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Two people asking for veneers can need very different plans. For that reason Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • How many teeth are involved, usually the front six to eight teeth
  • The type of veneer: porcelain or composite
  • Whether cleaning, fillings or gum treatment are needed first
  • How closely the shade and shape must match the neighbouring teeth

What you decide with the dentist

  • Porcelain or composite, and the laboratory work for porcelain
  • Doing all the veneers at once or in stages
  • Whether whitening, bonding or gum contouring are part of the plan

Your medical history matters too, including grinding, allergies to materials and any earlier dental work.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What does recovery after veneers look like?

Most people return to routine activity the same day. The teeth can be sensitive for a few days, and the veneers can feel slightly thick until you are used to them.

First 48 hours

The area stays numb for a few hours, so wait to eat until the feeling returns. Avoid very hot or cold food, and avoid biting hard food with the front teeth.

First week

Sensitivity should ease. Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste, and clean between the teeth. If the bite feels high, tell the clinic, because adjusting it is quick.

Daily habits

Avoid biting your nails or hard objects, and avoid very hard foods. Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day and clean between your teeth every day.1

Long term

Wear a mouthguard for sports.1 If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects the veneers. A veneer can chip, crack, wear down or come loose over time, and your dentist can re-bond, repair or replace it.1

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if a veneer comes off or chips, a tooth aches on its own, your bite feels too high, or your gums swell or bleed heavily. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Veneers last longest when they are protected from hard bites and the gum line is kept clean.

07 Limits

When are veneers the wrong choice?

Veneers are usually delayed, changed or not advised in these situations:

  • Clenching or grinding that is not managed, or a deep overbite, because these can break veneers.1
  • Untreated cavities, infection or gum disease, which are treated first.1
  • Thin enamel or large fillings, where a crown may hold better.
  • Crooked or crowded teeth that need to be moved before any cosmetic work.
  • A request that only needs a lighter colour, which whitening can often give with no enamel removed.
  • Treatment by anyone who is not a registered dentist, because of the risk of infection and nerve damage.1

If crooked teeth are the main concern, see braces or clear aligners.

Risks and complications

The main risks are sensitivity, a veneer that chips, cracks or comes loose, staining of composite veneers, decay at the edge of a veneer, and the loss of enamel, which cannot be put back.1

In a systematic review, about 95.7 out of 100 feldspathic porcelain veneers were still in function after 5 years. The 10-year figures ranged from 64 to 95 out of 100 across three studies, and the authors estimated about 95 out of 100 when the veneer is bonded to enamel.2

These are published averages and not a promise for any one patient, and the studies differed from each other.2

Veneers are worth it only when the teeth are healthy first and you understand that the enamel removed does not grow back.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first veneers appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit Dr. Revathi Indukuri listens to what you want to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite and takes photos and X-rays. If veneers suit you, you are told the type, the number of teeth, the visits and what each stage involves. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring photos of smiles you like and photos of your own smile from the past if you have them. Tell the dentist if you grind your teeth, have had earlier dental work or have allergies.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment, and you can take the written plan home to think it over.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

A veneer takes a thin layer of enamel that does not grow back, so I only advise one when a smaller step such as whitening or bonding would not give the result you want. I explain that choice before we start, and I tell you how to look after the veneers.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri

Dr. Revathi Indukuri completed her MDS in conservative dentistry and endodontics, the branch of dentistry that restores teeth while keeping as much natural tooth as possible, and her practice includes cosmetic dentistry. That training is why a smaller step, such as whitening or bonding, is considered before enamel is removed.

The smaller step first

Whitening, bonding or a crown are compared with veneers, so enamel is removed only when it is needed.

A planned smile

The clinic's earlier website lists digital smile designing, so the look can be previewed before treatment.

A written plan before treatment

You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts, so you know what comes next.

A team with different training

The clinic's team board lists a prosthodontist, an orthodontist and a periodontist, so alignment, gum and crown work can be planned with the matching dentist.

13 Questions

Veneer questions from patients in Kondapur

Are veneers reversible?

No. For a porcelain veneer, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth, and enamel does not grow back. That is why the plan is made carefully and why smaller steps such as whitening or bonding are considered first.

How long do veneers last?

No one can promise a number of years. In a systematic review, about 95.7 out of 100 porcelain veneers were still in function after 5 years, and the 10-year figures ranged more widely. Care, bite and grinding all matter, and a veneer can chip, crack or loosen and be repaired or replaced.

What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory, are strong and durable and usually need two or more visits. Composite veneers are shaped on the tooth in one visit from tooth-coloured filling material, are easier to repair and stain more easily.

Do veneers hurt?

The tooth is numbed if needed, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. The teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold for a few days afterwards. Tell the dentist if sensitivity gets worse or the bite feels high.

Can I have veneers if I grind my teeth?

It depends. Clenching or grinding can break veneers, so the grinding is managed first and a night guard is usually advised. A deep overbite can also strain veneers. The dentist checks your bite before advising them.

Will veneers stain?

Porcelain veneers resist stains well, and composite veneers stain more easily. Both need daily cleaning, and the natural teeth beside them can still stain. Tea, coffee and tobacco affect the neighbouring teeth, so whitening before veneers is often planned.

How is the cost of veneers decided?

Treatment is planned for one person, so the cost is given after the evaluation. The number of teeth, the type of veneer, the laboratory work and any health treatment needed first all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

Should I choose veneers, bonding or whitening?

It depends on the problem. Whitening changes colour only, bonding repairs small chips and gaps with little or no enamel removed, and veneers change colour, shape and size but remove enamel. The examination shows the smallest step that gives the look you want.

14 Second opinion

Want a second opinion on your veneers plan?

If another clinic has advised veneers on several teeth, bring your photos, X-rays and the written plan to your evaluation. The dentist will go through them with you and tell you whether a smaller step would give the look you want. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book your visit. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
