Quick answer

Full mouth dental implants are a set of fixed teeth held by several implants placed in the jawbone, used when most or all teeth in an arch are missing or cannot be saved. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, the plan starts with a scan and the number of implants is chosen from the bone you have.

01 Overview

What are full mouth dental implants and when are they used?

Instead of one implant for each missing tooth, a full-arch treatment places a small number of implants, often four to eight, in the jawbone and fixes a whole arch of teeth to them. The teeth are made as one bridge, and it is fixed to the implants so you cannot take it out yourself.

It is used when most or all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing, or are so loose or decayed that they cannot be saved, see tooth extraction. It is also an alternative to a conventional denture, which rests on the gum and can move.

The best-known approach is All-on-4, which uses four implants, two of them tilted, to carry the arch. A systematic review of 13 studies in 2013 included 4,804 implants, of which 74 failed, and 74 percent of those failures happened in the first 12 months. The authors found promising short-term results, but said there was little data beyond five years.1

Other plans use six or more implants, see All-on-4 dental implants and All-on-6 dental implants. If you need only one tooth replaced, see a single tooth implant.

In short, a few implants carry a whole arch of fixed teeth, and the evidence is strongest in the short term.

02 Candidacy

Am I suitable for full mouth dental implants in Kondapur?

Suitability depends on your bone, gums, general health and what you want. A scan and an examination decide. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Who it often suits

  • Most or all teeth in an arch missing, loose or beyond saving
  • Dentures that move, rub or make eating difficult
  • Enough bone, or bone that can be rebuilt, to hold the implants
  • Good general health and the ability to keep the teeth clean every day

Needs caution or a different plan

  • Active gum disease or infection, which is treated first2
  • Smoking or poorly controlled diabetes, which raise the risk of failure
  • Very little bone, which may need grafts or a different plan
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or medicines that affect bone, which need your doctor's opinion first

Bone, gum health and daily cleaning decide whether full-arch implants will work for you.

03 Options

Which full-arch option will I get in Kondapur?

There are three main ways to restore a full arch. The dentist explains which are possible with your bone and your wishes.

All-on-4 and All-on-6 implant-supported bridge

A single fixed bridge is held by four or six implants. The back implants may be tilted to use the bone that is there and avoid a graft. A review reported that most failures occurred early, and that fracture of the acrylic bridge was the main complication.1

Several visits

Implant overdenture on 2 to 4 implants

A removable denture clips onto two to four implants, so it stays steady but you take it out to clean. It needs fewer implants, and it is a step up from a standard denture.

Fewer implants

Fixed bridge on more implants with a bone graft

Where the bone is thin, a graft can be placed to build it up, and more implants may be used. This adds time and steps to the plan but can let a fixed bridge be used.

Longer plan

If your teeth are worn but not missing, a different plan is used, see full mouth rehabilitation.

A fixed bridge feels most like natural teeth, and an overdenture needs fewer implants.

04 Procedure

How are full mouth dental implants placed, step by step?

A full-arch plan is carried out in stages over several months, and the timing depends on your bone and the plan. The steps below are what usually happens.

The plan is made on a scan, and the final teeth are fitted after healing.

  1. Evaluation, scan and planning for full arch implants

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and takes X-rays and a 3D scan. The number and position of implants are planned from the bone available. You are told the options, timeline and what is needed first.

  2. Treating gum disease and removing failing teeth

Infection and gum disease are treated, see gum disease treatment, and teeth that cannot be saved are removed. Healing may be needed before the implants go in.

  3. Placing the implants in the jawbone

Under local anaesthetic, with sedation where advised, the implants are placed in the jawbone. A bone graft is added if needed. In some cases a temporary fixed set of teeth is fitted soon after, and in others it is delayed.

  4. Healing and bonding of the implants

The bone grows around the implants over several months. You eat soft food in the meantime, and a temporary set or your old denture, adjusted, may be worn.

  5. Fitting the final teeth

When the implants are firm, impressions or scans are taken and the final bridge is made, tried in, adjusted for the bite and fixed to the implants.

  6. Cleaning, check-ups and maintenance visits

You are shown how to clean under and around the bridge. Check-ups look at the gums and bone around the implants and at the bridge, and the bridge may be removed by the dentist from time to time for cleaning.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of full mouth dental implants in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Every mouth needs a different plan, so Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • The number of implants and whether one or both jaws are treated
  • Whether bone grafts or tooth removals are needed first
  • The type of final teeth: fixed bridge or overdenture, and its material
  • The implant system used

What you decide with the dentist

  • Whether a temporary set of teeth is fitted
  • The scans, sedation and number of visits
  • Treatment of gum disease or decay first

Your general health matters too, including diabetes, smoking and any medicines that affect bone healing.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What is it like to recover from full mouth dental implants?

Recovery takes a few days for surgery and several months for the bone to bond. The steps below help it go well.

After surgery

Expect swelling, soreness and some bruising for a few days. Use cold packs, rest with your head raised, and take only the medicines prescribed. A little oozing is normal in the first day.

Eating during healing

Eat soft, cool food and avoid hard, sticky or chewy food while the implants bond, even if the temporary teeth feel firm. The dentist tells you when you can chew normally.

Cleaning the implants and bridge

After the first days, rinse gently, and clean the implants and bridge as shown. Special brushes and a water flosser help clean under the bridge. Poor cleaning is the main cause of gum and bone problems around implants.

Long-term care

Do not smoke. Attend maintenance visits, usually every few months at first, because gum disease around implants can damage the bone. The final bridge may need repair or replacing after some years.1

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if bleeding does not stop with pressure, swelling gets worse after the third day, you have a fever or pus, or a tooth on the bridge breaks or loosens. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Soft food while healing, and lifelong cleaning around the implants, keep the result going.

07 Limits

When are full mouth dental implants the wrong choice?

A full-arch implant plan is usually delayed or replaced by another plan in these situations:

  • Active gum disease or infection that has not been controlled.2
  • Very little bone, where grafting is not possible or not wanted.
  • Smoking or poorly controlled diabetes that the patient cannot change.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or medicines that affect bone healing, which need a doctor's opinion first.
  • A patient who cannot clean under a fixed bridge and cannot attend maintenance visits.
  • Wanting the quickest or simplest route, where a well-made denture may serve better.

For a single missing tooth, see single tooth implant. For a fixed alternative on natural teeth, see dental bridges. For missing teeth in general, see missing teeth.

Risks and complications

The risks include infection, pain and swelling, nerve or sinus problems, implants that fail to bond, loosening or breaking of the bridge, and inflammation of the gum and bone around the implants that can cause bone loss. Speech and the feel of the teeth may take time to settle.

In the 2013 review, 74 of 4,804 All-on-4 implants failed, and the main complication with the prosthesis was fracture of the all-acrylic bridge. Average bone loss was about 1.3 mm at 36 months.1

The authors noted that the evidence is limited by study quality and that there are few data beyond five years.1 No one can promise that a full-arch bridge will last for any number of years.

Full-arch implants work well in the short term, and the long-term evidence is limited.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first full mouth implant appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit the dentist listens to your concerns, examines your teeth, gums and bite, and looks at X-rays or a scan. You are told whether full-arch implants are likely to suit you and what the other options are. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring any earlier X-rays and dentures, and a list of your medicines. Tell the dentist about diabetes, smoking, heart conditions and any treatment of the jaw.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. You can bring a family member. A plan is written after the scan, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

Patients who have lost most of their teeth often ask for fixed teeth in a single visit. What matters more is whether the bone can hold the implants and whether you can keep them clean for years. I would rather plan this slowly with a scan and a clear picture of the alternatives than rush it.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri

Dr. Revathi Indukuri reviewed this page as a dentist at the clinic. The clinic's team board lists a prosthodontist and implantologist, a periodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons, which are the roles a full-arch plan draws on, from the bone and gum to the final teeth.

Surgery and teeth planned together

The team board lists an implantologist, a periodontist, a prosthodontist and oral surgeons, so the surgery and the final teeth are planned as one.

Gum health first

Gum disease around the teeth is treated before implants, because it raises the risk of failure.

A written plan before treatment

You receive a written plan before any treatment starts, so you know what comes next.

Alternatives explained

Dentures, overdentures and bridges are explained next to full-arch implants, including where they suit better.

13 Questions

Full mouth dental implants questions from patients in Kondapur

What are full mouth dental implants?

They are a set of fixed teeth held by a small number of implants, usually four to eight, placed in the jawbone to replace most or all of the teeth in an arch. They are used when teeth are missing or cannot be saved, and as an alternative to dentures.

What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6?

All-on-4 uses four implants, with the back two often tilted, to carry the whole arch. All-on-6 uses six, which can spread the load more widely. The number depends on the bone and the plan, and the dentist explains which is possible for you.

How long does it take?

It is done in stages over several months. Teeth that cannot be saved are removed, implants are placed, the bone heals around them, and the final bridge is fitted. In some cases a temporary fixed set is fitted soon after surgery. The team gives an estimate after the scan.

Is the surgery painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, with sedation if advised, so you should not feel pain during it. Swelling, soreness and bruising are common for a few days afterwards and are managed with the medicines the dentist prescribes.

How long do full mouth implants last?

No one can promise a number of years. A 2013 review found that most implant failures occurred in the first year, and that fracture of the acrylic bridge was the main complication, but there were few data beyond five years. Cleaning and maintenance affect the result.

Are implants better than dentures?

Fixed implant teeth feel more like natural teeth and do not move, but they need surgery, more time and daily cleaning under the bridge. A denture is simpler and needs no surgery, but it rests on the gum and can move. The dentist explains which fits you.

How is the cost of full mouth dental implants decided?

The cost is given after the evaluation and scan. The number of implants, jaws treated, bone grafts, the type of final teeth, the implant system and the number of visits all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

What if I do not have enough bone?

A bone graft can sometimes rebuild the bone, adding time to the plan. Tilting the back implants can also use the bone that is there. If neither is possible, an overdenture or a well-fitting denture may be better. The scan shows what is possible.

14 Second opinion

Thinking of replacing a full arch of teeth?

Bring your X-rays, any scans and the advice you have had so far. The dentist will go through them with you and explain which options your bone allows and which you could skip. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
