Dental Crowns in Kondapur, Hyderabad

A tooth with a large filling, a crack or a root canal behind it can look fine and still be one bite away from breaking. A crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth above the gum, so the chewing force is spread over the cap and not over a weak core.

Elite Dental Clinic is a dental clinic in Kondapur, Hyderabad. This page is medically reviewed by Dr. Revathi Indukuri, an endodontist whose MDS covers restoring and saving natural teeth. It explains when dental crowns in Kondapur are needed, the materials, the two visits, the risks and how your plan is set.

Quick answer

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a weak, broken or heavily filled tooth to strengthen it and improve its look. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, a crown takes two visits with a temporary crown in between, and it is planned after an evaluation.

01 Overview

What is a dental crown and when does a tooth need one?

A crown, sometimes called a cap, can make a tooth stronger and improve its appearance.1 The dentist shapes the tooth, takes an impression, and a crown made to fit is cemented over the shaped tooth at a second visit.2

The American Dental Association lists the usual reasons: a tooth with a large filling and not enough tooth left to hold it, a weak tooth that could break, a tooth that is already broken, a discoloured or misshapen tooth, a crown to anchor a bridge, and a crown to cover an implant.1

A crown is not the first choice for every damaged tooth. If the damage is small, a filling keeps more of your own tooth. A tooth that has had a root canal often needs a crown afterwards, because little healthy tooth may be left.

Because a crown replaces the outer layer of the tooth, the tooth has to be shaped to make room for it. That is why the decision is made on the X-ray and the examination, and not on how the tooth looks in the mirror.

In short, a crown protects a tooth that is too weak for a filling, and it means shaping the tooth.

A crown is sometimes called a tooth cap. A porcelain crown and a zirconia crown differ in strength and in how they look, and a crown after root canal treatment is common because the tooth is weaker.

02 Candidacy

Who needs a dental crown in Kondapur?

A dentist decides after an examination and an X-ray. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Signs a tooth may need a crown

  • A large filling that has broken down, or a tooth with too little left to hold a new filling
  • A crack, or a weak tooth that could break under normal chewing
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and is now thin and brittle
  • A tooth that is badly discoloured or misshapen

Needs caution or a different plan

  • Untreated decay or gum disease, which is treated first because a crown does not stop it
  • Heavy grinding or clenching, which can chip or crack a crown2
  • A crack that runs down into the root, where the tooth may not be saveable
  • A tooth with so little structure left that a crown cannot be held in place

The amount of healthy tooth left decides whether a crown can work, not how old the tooth is.

03 Options

Which crown material fits your tooth in Kondapur?

The choice depends on where the tooth is, how hard you bite and how much the colour matters. Published reviews report that most crowns of all the common types are still working after 5 years.3

Metal-ceramic crown

A metal base with a tooth-coloured ceramic layer. In a review of 67 studies, about 94.7 out of 100 were still in function after 5 years.3

2 visits

All-ceramic crown

Made fully of ceramic, which gives the most natural colour. Survival at 5 years in the same review ranged from about 92 to 97 out of 100, depending on the ceramic type.3

Crown on an implant

A crown can also cover a post in the jaw that replaces a missing tooth. See dental implants.

After the post heals

A crown can also anchor a bridge, with a crown on each tooth beside the gap. If the tooth is at the front and mainly needs a better look, a thin veneer may be an option instead, because it removes less tooth.

04 Procedure

How is a dental crown made and fitted, step by step?

A crown takes two visits, with a temporary crown in between.2 Timings vary by tooth, and you are told the plan for yours at the first visit.

The temporary crown protects the shaped tooth until the final crown is ready.

  1. Examination and X-ray of the tooth

The dentist examines the tooth and the gum and takes an X-ray to check the root and the bone. You are told whether a crown is needed, whether another treatment such as a root canal comes first, and what the options are.

  2. Local anaesthesia and shaping the prepared tooth

The tooth is numbed, any decay or old filling that is failing is removed, and the tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown.2

  3. Impression of the shaped tooth

An impression or a digital scan records the shaped tooth and your bite, and it goes to a dental laboratory, where the crown is made to fit.2

  4. Fitting a temporary crown

A temporary crown is placed to cover and protect the shaped tooth while the final crown is made.2 It is not as strong as the final crown, so avoid sticky food.

  5. Crown fitting: checking the final crown

At the second visit the temporary crown is taken off and the final crown is tried in. The fit and the bite are checked, and an X-ray can be used to confirm the fit.2

  6. Cementing the crown and review

Once the fit and the colour are right, the crown is cemented in place. You are shown how to clean around it, and a review visit checks the gum and the bite.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of dental crowns in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Two teeth that both need a crown can need very different work. For that reason Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • Which tooth it is, and how much healthy tooth is left to hold the crown
  • Whether the tooth first needs a root canal, a build-up or gum treatment
  • How many crowns are planned, for example for a bridge
  • How hard you bite, and whether you grind your teeth

What you decide with the dentist

  • The crown material: metal-ceramic or all-ceramic
  • How closely the colour needs to match the teeth beside it
  • The timing of the two visits around your work and travel

Your medical history matters too, including any allergies to materials or medicines.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What does recovery after a dental crown look like?

Most people return to routine activity the same day. A newly shaped tooth can be sensitive, and the crown can feel slightly different from the tooth it replaced, so give your bite a few days to settle.

First 48 hours

The area stays numb for a few hours, so wait to eat until the feeling returns. Chew on the other side and avoid sticky or very hard food while the temporary crown is in place.2

Temporary crown period

When flossing, slide the floss out sideways instead of lifting it up, so the temporary crown is not pulled off.2 Call the clinic if it comes loose.

First weeks

A final crown can make the tooth briefly sensitive, which normally settles.2 Tell your dentist if the bite feels high or the sensitivity gets worse.

Long term

Brush and floss the crown like any other tooth, and attend regular check-ups. Decay can still start at the edge of a crown, so the gum line needs cleaning every day.2

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if a crown or temporary crown comes off, your bite feels too high, you have pain or swelling in the gum around the tooth, or sensitivity to cold keeps getting worse. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

A crown protects the tooth only while its edge stays clean, so daily cleaning matters as much as the crown.

07 Limits

When is a dental crown the wrong choice?

A crown is usually not advised, or is delayed, in these situations:

  • A tooth that needs only a small repair, because shaping a tooth for a crown removes healthy tooth that a filling would keep.
  • Untreated decay, an infection or gum disease, which are treated first.
  • A crack that runs into the root, because a crown cannot hold a split root together.
  • Too little tooth left above the gum to hold a crown, where the tooth may be removed and replaced instead.
  • Heavy untreated grinding, which can break a crown, until it is managed.
  • A plan that cannot include the second visit, because a temporary crown is not meant to stay for long.

If the tooth cannot be saved, a dental implant or a bridge is one way to replace it.

Risks and complications

The main risks are decay under or at the edge of the crown, a crown that comes loose if the tooth core under it is weak, a chipped or cracked crown, especially in people who grind their teeth, and sensitivity of the tooth to cold. Sometimes the nerve of a crowned tooth is affected and a root canal is needed.2

In a review of 67 studies of single crowns, about 94.7 out of 100 metal-ceramic crowns and between about 92 and 97 out of 100 all-ceramic crowns were still in function after 5 years, depending on the ceramic.3

Most crowns last at least 5 years and some last 15 to 20 years, but no one can promise a number for one tooth.2

A crown is worth it only when the tooth under it is healthy enough to carry it.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first dental crown appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit Dr. Revathi Indukuri listens to your history, examines the tooth and the gum and reviews an X-ray. If a crown is the right plan, you are told the material choices, the two visits and what each involves. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring any earlier dental X-rays and a list of your medicines. Tell the dentist if you grind your teeth, have allergies, or have had a root canal on this tooth.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. The temporary crown is explained before you leave, including what to avoid and when to call. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

A crown asks you to give up a little healthy tooth, so I only advise one when a filling would not hold. I show you the tooth, explain why, and tell you what the temporary crown is for before we start.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri

Dr. Revathi Indukuri completed her MDS in conservative dentistry and endodontics, the branch of dentistry that deals with saving and restoring natural teeth. Her training covers both the root canal treatment that often comes before a crown and the restoration that protects the tooth afterwards.

Planning starts with the tooth

Every plan starts with an examination and an X-ray, so a crown is only advised when a smaller repair would not hold.

Root canal and crown in one plan

A tooth that needs a root canal first is planned together with its crown, so the tooth is not left without its final cover.

A written plan before treatment

You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts, so you know what comes next.

A team with different training

The clinic's team board lists a prosthodontist and implantologist, so a crown that anchors a bridge or covers an implant can be planned with the matching dentist.

13 Questions

Dental crown questions from patients in Kondapur

How many visits does a dental crown take?

Usually two. At the first visit the tooth is numbed, shaped and measured, and a temporary crown is placed. At the second visit the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is checked and cemented.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. The tooth can be sensitive to cold for a short time afterwards. Tell your dentist if the sensitivity gets worse or the bite feels high.

How long does a dental crown last?

Most crowns last at least 5 years and some last 15 to 20 years, but no one can promise a number. Daily cleaning at the gum line, regular check-ups and managing tooth grinding all help. Decay can still start at the edge of a crown.

What is a temporary crown for?

It covers and protects the shaped tooth while the laboratory makes the final crown, and it lets the dentist check your bite. It is not as strong as the final crown, so avoid sticky food, and slide floss out sideways instead of lifting it.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often, but not always. A tooth that has had a root canal can be thin and brittle, and a crown protects it from breaking. The dentist decides after seeing how much healthy tooth is left.

What is the difference between a crown, a filling and a veneer?

A filling repairs one area of a tooth and keeps the most natural tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth above the gum and is used when a filling would not hold. A veneer is a thin shell for the front of a tooth, used mainly to improve its look.

How is the cost of a dental crown decided?

Treatment is planned for one tooth and one person, so the cost is given after the evaluation. The tooth, the material, any root canal or build-up needed first and the number of crowns all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

What should I do if a crown comes off?

Keep the crown somewhere clean and dry and call the clinic the same day. Do not use glue to put it back. The tooth under it is exposed and can decay or become sensitive, so it needs to be seen soon.

14 Second opinion

Want a second opinion on your dental crown plan?

If another clinic has advised a crown, bring your X-ray and any written plan to your evaluation. The dentist will go through them with you and tell you whether a smaller repair would hold. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book your visit. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
