Quick answer

Periodontal treatment is the care of periodontitis, a gum infection that damages the bone around the teeth, by removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and then keeping the gums healthy. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, it follows a stepwise plan after a full gum examination.

01 Overview

What is periodontal treatment and when is it needed?

Gum disease starts with plaque on the teeth. If it is only on the surface, the gums become red and bleed, which is gingivitis and can be reversed, see gingivitis treatment. If the infection spreads below the gum line, the fibres and bone that hold the tooth are destroyed, and pockets form around the teeth. This is periodontitis, and it needs periodontal treatment. A general introduction is on the gum disease treatment page.

Signs include gums that bleed, swell or pull back, bad breath that does not go, a bad taste, teeth that feel loose or have moved, and gaps opening between teeth. Periodontitis can cause no pain in the early stages, so many people find out only at a check-up.2

European guidelines treat periodontitis in four steps. Step one is changing behaviour and cleaning the teeth above the gum line. Step two is subgingival instrumentation, a deep cleaning below the gum line. Step three adds further treatment for sites that do not respond. Step four is supportive care to keep the result.1

The guideline describes subgingival instrumentation as the core treatment that is always delivered. It is not enough alone in advanced disease, with very deep pockets, in furcation lesions between roots, or in bony defects.1

In short, periodontal treatment clears the infection below the gums in steps and then maintains the result.

02 Candidacy

Who needs periodontal treatment in Kondapur?

A gum examination decides whether you need periodontal treatment, scaling or only better home care. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Signs that may point to periodontitis

  • Gums that bleed on brushing and keep bleeding
  • Gums that have pulled back, making teeth look longer
  • Loose teeth, or teeth that have shifted or developed gaps
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste, or pus around a tooth

Needs extra care

  • Smoking, which hides symptoms and slows healing2
  • Diabetes, which makes gum disease worse and harder to control
  • A tooth that is very loose, where extraction may be the plan
  • Pregnancy or heart conditions, where the plan is coordinated with your doctor

Bleeding that does not stop and loose or moving teeth call for a gum check.

03 Options

Which periodontal treatment will I need in Kondapur?

Treatment follows the steps in the guideline, and the dentist moves to the next step only if it is needed.

Scaling and root planing for gum pockets

Also called deep cleaning, this removes plaque and tartar from the root surfaces below the gum line and smooths them, under local anaesthetic. It is the core treatment for periodontitis.1

Often 1 to 4 visits

Flap surgery for deep pockets and bone loss

If deep pockets remain after the first treatment, the gum is lifted to clean the roots under direct view, and in some cases the bone is reshaped. It is advised only for sites that did not respond.1

Surgical visit

Maintenance visits and home care after periodontitis treatment

Regular visits keep the bacteria from rebuilding. The guideline treats supportive care as the last step, and it lasts for life.1 Home care with soft brushes and interdental brushes is part of the plan.

Every few months

Laser may be used as an addition by some clinics, see laser gum treatment. Where gums have receded, see gum grafting.

04 Procedure

How is periodontal treatment done, step by step?

Treatment takes place over several visits and is reviewed at each stage. The steps below are what usually happens.

Treatment moves step by step, and each step is reviewed before the next.

  1. Gum examination and measuring the gum pockets

The dentist measures the depth of the gum pockets around each tooth with a thin probe, checks for bleeding, looseness and bone loss on X-rays, and records the results. You are told your stage and your plan.

  2. Cleaning above the gum line and teaching home care

You are shown how to brush and clean between the teeth, and a teeth cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gum line. Smokers are advised to stop.

  3. Scaling and root planing of the gum pockets

Under local anaesthetic, plaque and tartar are removed from the roots below the gum, by hand tools or an ultrasonic scaler, and the root is smoothed. One mouth is often done in a few visits.

  4. Re-evaluating the gums after periodontal treatment

The gums are checked again after some weeks. Pockets are re-measured. If they have closed and bleeding has stopped, the plan moves to maintenance, and if deep pockets remain, further treatment such as surgery is discussed.1

  5. Flap surgery for remaining deep pockets

For sites that did not respond, a small flap of gum is lifted, the roots are cleaned and the gum is stitched back. Bone is sometimes reshaped.

  6. Supportive periodontal care and maintenance visits

You return every few months for cleaning below the gum line and a check of pockets and bone. The interval is set from your results.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of periodontal treatment in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Gum disease differs in each mouth, so Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an examination. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • How advanced the gum disease is, and how many teeth are involved
  • The number of deep cleaning visits and whether quadrants are done separately
  • Whether flap surgery or bone work is needed
  • The number of maintenance visits

What you decide with the dentist

  • Whether laser or other additions are advised
  • X-rays or a scan to measure bone loss
  • Whether any tooth must be removed or replaced

Your general health matters too, including diabetes, smoking and any medicines that affect the gums.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What is it like to recover from periodontal treatment?

After deep cleaning the gums are sore and the teeth may feel different. The steps below help them heal.

The first days after deep cleaning

The gums may be tender and bleed a little for a few days. Avoid hard, spicy and very hot food. Use the pain relief the dentist advises. Rinse gently with warm salt water.

Tooth sensitivity and gum recession

As swollen gums settle, they can shrink back, so teeth may feel more sensitive to cold and look longer. This is normal and often eases, see sensitive teeth.

Cleaning between the teeth

Brush twice a day with a soft brush. Clean between the teeth every day with interdental brushes or floss. This is the most important part of keeping the gums healthy, and the dentist shows you the right size.

Stopping smoking and managing diabetes

Smoking slows healing and hides symptoms. If you have diabetes, keeping it controlled helps your gums respond to treatment.2

When to call us

Call the clinic if bleeding does not stop, if you have a swelling or a gum abscess with pus, if a tooth becomes very loose, or if you have a fever. If swelling spreads to the face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Cleaning between the teeth every day and keeping to the maintenance visits protect the result.

07 Limits

What are the limits of periodontal treatment?

Periodontal treatment controls the infection, but it has limits.

  • Bone that has already been lost does not grow back with deep cleaning alone.
  • Very loose teeth with little bone left may not be saved, and extraction may be advised.
  • Deep cleaning is not enough alone in advanced disease, very deep pockets or furcation lesions.1
  • Without good home cleaning and maintenance, the infection returns.
  • Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes reduce how well the gums respond.2

If a tooth cannot be saved, see tooth extraction and dental implants. For milder gum problems, see bleeding gums treatment.

Risks and complications

The risks include soreness and bleeding after treatment, tooth sensitivity, gums that shrink back and make teeth look longer, loosening of teeth for a short time, and, rarely, infection after deep cleaning or surgery.

Periodontitis is a long-term condition that can return. The guideline places supportive care for life as the last step because the disease relapses without it.1

Results differ between people and between teeth. No one can promise that every tooth will be saved or that the gums will never need further treatment.

Treatment controls gum disease, and keeping it controlled depends on you and maintenance visits.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first periodontal treatment appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit the dentist looks at your gums, measures the pockets around every tooth, checks for loose teeth and reviews X-rays. You are told whether you have gingivitis or periodontitis, how far it has gone and what the plan is. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring any earlier X-rays and a list of your medicines. Tell the dentist about diabetes, smoking, pregnancy, heart conditions and any family history of gum disease.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit measures how far the disease has gone, and ends with a plan.

Periodontitis is a long-term condition, not a one-visit problem. The aim of treatment is to remove what is causing the infection below the gum line, then keep it from coming back. What you do at home and whether you come for your maintenance visits matter as much as the deep cleaning itself.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri reviewed this page as a dentist at the clinic. The clinic's team board lists a periodontist, whose speciality is the gums and the bone that hold the teeth, along with oral surgeons and a prosthodontist and implantologist for cases where teeth are lost.

13 Questions

Periodontal treatment questions from patients in Kondapur

What is periodontal treatment?

It is the treatment of periodontitis, a gum infection that damages the bone around the teeth. It removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line, checks how the gums have responded, and then keeps the gums healthy with regular maintenance visits.

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums from plaque on the teeth and can be reversed with good cleaning. Periodontitis is when the infection reaches below the gum line and destroys the bone and fibres that hold the teeth. It needs periodontal treatment.

Is deep cleaning painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. The gums can be sore and tender for a few days afterwards, and teeth may feel sensitive. The dentist advises pain relief.

How many visits does periodontal treatment take?

Deep cleaning is often done over one to four visits, depending on how much of the mouth needs it. A review is booked after some weeks. Further treatment is added only if deep pockets remain, and maintenance visits then continue for life.

Can gum disease be got rid of for good?

Periodontitis can be controlled, but not removed for good. Treatment stops the infection from getting worse and lets the gums heal, but bone that has been lost does not usually grow back, and the disease can return without maintenance and good cleaning.

Will my loose teeth tighten up?

Teeth that are loose because of swollen gums may firm up as the gums heal. Teeth that are loose because the bone has been lost may not, and the dentist will tell you whether they can be saved.

How is the cost of periodontal treatment decided?

The cost is given after the gum examination. The stage of the disease, the number of teeth and visits, any surgery, and the maintenance plan all change it. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

Does smoking affect gum treatment?

Yes. Smoking hides the signs of gum disease, slows healing and lowers the response to treatment. Stopping smoking is part of the plan, and your dentist can help you with advice.

14 Second opinion

Are your gums bleeding or are your teeth loose?

Book a gum examination and the dentist will measure your gums, explain what is happening and tell you what the plan could be. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book. The visit is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
