Wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom Tooth Removal in Kondapur, Hyderabad

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through, usually in the late teens or early twenties, and many jaws no longer have room for them. A wisdom tooth that is stuck, tilted or only half through can cause pain, swelling and infection at the back of the mouth.

Elite Dental Clinic is a dental clinic in Kondapur, Hyderabad. This page is medically reviewed by Dr. Revathi Indukuri, a dentist at the clinic, and wisdom teeth are removed by the clinic's oral and maxillofacial surgeons. It explains how wisdom tooth removal in Kondapur works, when a tooth should stay, the risks and how recovery goes.

Quick answer

Wisdom tooth removal takes out a third molar that has no room to come through or is causing pain, infection or decay. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, it is planned after an examination and an X-ray, usually under local anaesthetic, and most people return to normal activity the next day.

01 Overview

What is wisdom tooth removal and why is it done?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars, and they usually come through between the ages of 17 and 21.2 When there is not enough room, a wisdom tooth can be impacted, which means trapped in the jaw or under the gum, or only partly through the gum.12

The NHS lists the problems this can cause: pain and swelling, infections of the gum called pericoronitis, food getting stuck, tooth decay, gum disease, a fluid-filled cyst and a dental abscess.1 The American Dental Association adds that a cyst can damage the roots of nearby teeth.2

Removal is advised for pain, infection, cysts, tumours, damage to nearby teeth, gum disease or decay, and sometimes as part of other treatment such as braces.2 If the pain at the back of your mouth is the reason you are reading this, see wisdom tooth pain.

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. A healthy one that can be reached and cleaned can stay, with flossing around it and regular dental visits, although problems can still develop later.2 Removal is a kind of tooth extraction, and a buried or angled tooth needs a surgical extraction.

In short, a wisdom tooth comes out when it causes trouble, and a healthy one can often stay.

02 Candidacy

Who needs wisdom tooth removal in Kondapur?

Only an examination and an X-ray show whether a wisdom tooth should come out. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Signs a wisdom tooth may need to come out

  • Pain or swelling at the back of the jaw, or a sore, swollen gum over a partly erupted tooth1
  • Repeated gum infection around the tooth, known as pericoronitis1
  • Food trapped around the tooth, or decay in the tooth or the tooth in front of it12
  • A cyst, or damage to the next tooth, seen on an X-ray12

Needs caution or a different plan

  • Blood-thinning medicines or bleeding problems, which need advice from your physician first
  • A tooth lying very close to the nerve of the lower jaw, which needs careful imaging1
  • A spreading infection or limited mouth opening, which are treated before surgery
  • Smoking, which raises the chance of dry socket3

Pain, infection and decay are the usual reasons, and a healthy wisdom tooth can stay.

03 Options

Which type of wisdom tooth removal fits your tooth in Kondapur?

The choice depends on how the tooth is lying. Local anaesthetic is standard, and sedation or a general anaesthetic may be offered when the teeth are harder to remove or you are anxious.1

Simple extraction

For a wisdom tooth that has come fully through the gum. It is loosened and lifted out. See tooth extraction.

A few minutes

Surgical extraction of an impacted tooth

For a tooth that is buried or tilted. The gum is cut, the socket is widened and the tooth is removed in one or more pieces, with stitches if needed.1 See surgical tooth extraction.

No more than 40 minutes

Monitoring a healthy wisdom tooth

For a tooth with no symptoms that can be reached and cleaned. You floss around it and attend regular check-ups, and the X-rays are repeated if needed.2

Regular reviews

Whether one tooth or several are removed at one visit is decided from the X-ray and your health, and the surgeon explains the reasons before any decision is made.

A tooth that has come through is simpler to remove, a buried tooth needs surgery, and a healthy tooth can be watched.

04 Procedure

How is a wisdom tooth removed, step by step?

The procedure takes just a few minutes and should take no more than 40 minutes.1 You are told the plan for your teeth at the first visit.

The X-ray plans the removal, and the aftercare protects the socket afterwards.

  1. Examination and X-ray of the wisdom teeth

The dentist examines the gum and the teeth and checks the X-ray, usually a full-mouth OPG, to see how the wisdom teeth lie, where the roots are and how close the nerve of the lower jaw is. You are told what was found and what the options are.

  2. Local anaesthesia, with sedation if needed

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, which is standard.1 Sedation or a general anaesthetic may be offered when the teeth are harder to remove or you are anxious.1

  3. Removing the impacted wisdom tooth

For a tooth that is buried or tilted, the gum is cut, the socket is widened and the tooth is taken out in one or more pieces.1 You feel pressure and movement but should not feel sharp pain.

  4. Cleaning the socket and stitches

The socket is cleaned and, if needed, the gum is closed with stitches.1 A gauze pad is placed over the socket for you to bite on.

  5. Aftercare instructions and medicines

You are told how to control bleeding, what to eat, how to clean your mouth and which medicines to take. Smoking is advised against, because it raises the chance of dry socket.3

  6. Review visit

A review checks healing and removes any stitches that are not dissolving. Tell the clinic about any numbness, severe pain or signs of infection before then.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of wisdom tooth removal in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Two wisdom teeth can need very different work. For that reason Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • How the tooth is lying: through the gum, tilted or buried in the jaw
  • How many wisdom teeth need to come out
  • Whether an infection needs to be treated before surgery
  • Your medical history, including blood-thinning medicines and long-term conditions

What you decide with the dentist

  • Local anaesthetic alone, or with sedation
  • Removing the teeth at one visit or in stages
  • The timing of the visits around your work and travel

The X-ray and imaging you need can also change the plan.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What does recovery after wisdom tooth removal look like?

You can usually go back to normal activities the day after, and a more complex removal may need 1 to 3 days off work.1 Pain and swelling are expected for about two weeks and start to improve after 1 or 2 days.1

First 24 hours

Bite gently on the gauze to control bleeding, and use cold packs on the cheek. Eat soft, cool food, and avoid smoking, spitting hard and drinking through a straw. Take only the medicines prescribed.

Days 2 to 3

Swelling and soreness should begin to improve after 1 or 2 days.1 Your jaw may feel stiff and chewing may be hard. From the second day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.

Days 3 to 5

Watch for dry socket, where the blood clot is lost and a throbbing pain starts in the jaw, usually 3 to 5 days after surgery.3 Call the clinic if the pain gets worse instead of better.

Weeks 1 to 2

Pain and swelling settle over about two weeks.1 Keep cleaning the rest of your mouth, attend the review visit and return to harder food slowly.

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, pain is severe and painkillers do not help, you have a fever, a bad taste or discharge, or numbness of the tongue, lip or chin does not improve. See also dental emergency. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Most people feel better within days, and the signs to call about are bleeding, severe pain, fever and numbness.

07 Limits

When is wisdom tooth removal the wrong choice?

Removal is usually delayed, changed or not advised in these situations:

  • A healthy wisdom tooth that has come through and can be cleaned, which can stay with regular check-ups.2
  • Blood-thinning medicines or other medical conditions, until your physician has reviewed them.
  • A tooth lying very close to the nerve of the lower jaw, where imaging and a surgeon's plan are needed first.1
  • A spreading infection, which is treated before the tooth is removed.
  • Smoking that cannot be paused, because it raises the chance of dry socket.3
  • A plan that cannot include aftercare and a review visit.

If a tooth is lost later and the gap needs replacing, see dental implants.

Risks and complications

The main risks are dry socket, infection that needs antibiotics, bleeding, swelling and jaw stiffness, and damage to a nerve near the tooth, which can cause numbness or tingling in the tongue, lips and chin.13

Dry socket happens when a blood clot does not form or is lost, usually 3 to 5 days after surgery. It is more likely if you smoke, have had it before, are over 25, do not follow the aftercare, or the removal was difficult.3

Nerve symptoms usually settle in a few weeks or months, but if the nerve is badly damaged the numbness may not go away.13

A wisdom tooth should come out when the benefit is clear, and the risks are explained before you decide.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first wisdom tooth appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit the dentist listens to your symptoms, examines the gum and the teeth and reviews an X-ray. If a wisdom tooth needs to come out, you are told how it lies, the type of removal, the anaesthetic choices and what recovery will involve. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring any earlier dental X-rays and a list of your medicines. Tell the dentist if you take blood thinners, have a heart condition, diabetes or allergies, or smoke.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. If you have swelling or severe pain, call or send a WhatsApp message before you come, so your visit can be planned. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

13 Questions

Wisdom tooth questions from patients in Kondapur

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. Pain and swelling are expected afterwards and usually start to improve after 1 or 2 days. Take only the medicines the dentist prescribes.

How long does recovery take?

Most people go back to normal activities the day after, and a more complex removal may need 1 to 3 days off work. Pain and swelling settle over about two weeks. The jaw can be stiff and chewing can be hard for a while.

Do all wisdom teeth have to be removed?

No. A healthy wisdom tooth that has come through and can be cleaned can stay, with flossing and regular check-ups. Removal is advised for pain, infection, cysts, damage to nearby teeth, gum disease or decay, and sometimes as part of braces treatment.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket happens when the blood clot does not form in the socket or is lost, usually 3 to 5 days after removal. It causes a throbbing pain in the jaw. It is more likely if you smoke, have had it before, are over 25 or the removal was difficult. Call the clinic if you suspect it.

Can wisdom tooth removal damage a nerve?

It can. A nerve near the tooth can be bruised or injured, which causes numbness or tingling in the tongue, lips or chin. In most cases this lasts a few weeks or months. If the nerve is badly damaged the numbness may not go away, which is why the X-ray is checked before surgery.

What is the difference between simple and surgical removal?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that has come fully through the gum. A surgical extraction is for a tooth that is buried or tilted, where the gum is cut, the socket is widened and the tooth is taken out in one or more pieces. The X-ray decides which one you need.

How is the cost of wisdom tooth removal decided?

Treatment is planned for one person, so the cost is given after the evaluation. How the tooth lies, how many teeth come out, the anaesthetic and any infection to treat first all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

When should I call the clinic after removal?

Call the same day for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, severe pain that painkillers do not help, a fever, a bad taste or discharge, or numbness that does not improve. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you cannot breathe or swallow well, go to a hospital emergency department.

14 Second opinion

Want a second opinion on your wisdom tooth plan?

If you have been told a wisdom tooth must come out, or that all four must be removed, bring your X-rays to your evaluation. The dentist will go through them with you and explain whether removal is needed. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book your visit. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
