Quick answer

A single tooth implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of one missing tooth, with a crown fitted over it once the bone has healed around it. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, it is planned from X-rays and a scan and done in stages.

01 Overview

What is a single tooth implant and how does it replace one missing tooth?

A single tooth implant has three parts. The post is a small titanium screw that sits in the jawbone and takes the place of the tooth root. The abutment is a connector that holds the crown. The crown is the visible tooth, made to match its neighbours in shape and colour.

After the post is placed, the bone grows around it and holds it firmly. This is called osseointegration, and it is what makes an implant stable for chewing.1

Compared with a bridge, a single implant does not need the teeth on either side to be shaved down to carry crowns. Compared with a partial denture, it is fixed in place and does not rest on the gum. For a general explanation of all implant options, see dental implants.

A systematic review of implants that carry single crowns found that the implants were still in place in about 96.8 out of 100 cases after 5 years, and the crowns on them in about 94.5 out of 100 cases.2 These are averages, and your own result depends on your mouth, your health and how well the implant is cleaned.

In short, a single implant replaces one tooth and its root, and leaves the neighbouring teeth alone.

02 Candidacy

Am I suitable for a single tooth implant in Kondapur?

Suitability is decided from an examination, X-rays or a 3D scan, and your general health. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Who it often suits

  • One tooth missing with healthy teeth on either side
  • Enough jawbone height and width for the post, or bone that can be built up
  • Healthy gums, or gums treated first
  • A wish for a fixed replacement that does not rely on other teeth

Needs caution or a different plan

  • Active gum disease or infection around the gap, which is treated first1
  • Smoking or poorly controlled diabetes, which raise the risk of the implant failing
  • Not enough bone, which may need a graft or a different plan
  • A growing teenager, where an implant is usually delayed until the jaw has finished growing

Healthy gums, enough bone and good general health are what an implant needs.

03 Options

How can one missing tooth be replaced in Kondapur?

An implant is one of three common ways to replace a single tooth. The dentist explains which of them fit your mouth.

Implant post, abutment and crown for one missing tooth

The post goes into the bone, and the crown is fixed over it after healing. The neighbouring teeth are not cut, and the bone around the post keeps getting the pressure of chewing that helps to maintain it.1

A few months

Bridge across the gap

A fixed bridge uses the teeth on both sides as supports, and a replacement tooth hangs between them. It is quicker, though healthy teeth must be shaped to take the crowns. A review found conventional bridges still in place in about 93.8 out of 100 cases at 5 years.3

A few weeks

Partial denture or leaving the gap

A removable partial denture is the simplest option and needs no surgery. Leaving a gap can let nearby teeth drift and the bone shrink in that area, so it is worth discussing even if you decide against treatment.

A few weeks

If you are missing most of your teeth rather than one, see full mouth dental implants.

An implant spares the neighbouring teeth, and a bridge is quicker and avoids surgery.

04 Procedure

How is a single tooth implant placed, step by step?

Treatment is done in stages, and the timing depends on whether the tooth is still there, the bone and how you heal. The steps below are what usually happens.

The implant is placed first, left to bond with the bone, and the crown follows.

  1. Planning the single tooth implant with X-rays or a scan

The dentist examines the gap, the neighbouring teeth and the gums, and takes X-rays or a 3D scan to measure the bone. You are told the plan, the number of visits and any steps needed first, such as treating gum disease or a bone graft.

  2. Removing the tooth and adding a bone graft if needed

If the tooth is still in the mouth, it is removed, see tooth extraction. Sometimes the implant is placed at the same visit, and sometimes the socket is left to heal first. A bone graft is added if the bone is thin.

  3. Placing the implant post in the jawbone

Under local anaesthetic, a small opening is made in the gum and the post is screwed into the bone. The gum is closed over it or a small healing cap is placed. Most people feel pressure but no pain.

  4. Healing and bonding with the bone

The bone grows around the post over some weeks to months. A temporary tooth can be worn in the meantime if the gap shows. Do not chew hard food on that side.

  5. Fitting the abutment and the implant crown

Once the post is firm, the abutment is attached and an impression or scan is taken. A crown is made to match the neighbouring teeth, fitted, and checked for the bite.

  6. Reviews and cleaning around the implant

You are shown how to clean around the implant. Check-ups look at the gum and bone around it, and X-rays are taken from time to time.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of a single tooth implant in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Two people with one missing tooth can need very different plans, so Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • The position of the tooth, and the bone and gum available
  • Whether a bone graft or a tooth removal is needed first
  • The implant system and the crown material used
  • The number of stages and visits

What you decide with the dentist

  • Whether a temporary tooth is needed
  • Treatment of gum disease or decay first
  • The scans and X-rays needed for planning

Your general health matters too, including diabetes, smoking and any medicines that affect bone healing.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What is it like to recover from a single tooth implant?

Recovery after a single implant is usually short, and the care afterwards is long term. The steps below help it settle.

The first days

Expect some soreness, mild swelling and a little oozing for a few days. Use cold packs on the cheek, eat soft and cool food, and take only the medicines prescribed. Do not rinse hard or spit for the first day.

Cleaning the area

After the first day, rinse gently with salt water. Brush the other teeth as usual, and clean around the implant as shown by the dentist, with a soft brush and interdental brushes.

Smoking and habits

Do not smoke while the implant heals, because smoking slows healing and raises the chance of failure. Avoid hard and sticky food on that side until the dentist says it is fine to chew.

Long-term care

Clean around the implant every day and go to regular check-ups, because gum disease around an implant can damage the bone. Teeth cleaning visits remain important, see teeth cleaning.

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if bleeding does not stop with pressure, swelling gets worse after the third day, there is a fever, pus, or a loose post or crown, or the numbness lasts beyond a day. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Gentle care at first, then daily cleaning around the implant for life.

07 Limits

When is a single tooth implant the wrong choice?

An implant is usually delayed or replaced by another plan in these situations:

  • Active gum disease or infection that has not been treated.1
  • Not enough bone, where a graft is not possible or not wanted.
  • Smoking or poorly controlled diabetes that the patient cannot change.
  • A jaw that is still growing, as in teenagers.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or some medicines that affect bone healing, which need your doctor's opinion first.
  • A wish for the quickest or the simplest option, where a bridge or denture may suit better.

For gum problems around the gap, see gum disease treatment. For missing teeth in general, see missing teeth.

Risks and complications

The risks include infection, pain and swelling, damage to nearby teeth, nerves or sinus, the implant failing to bond with the bone, a loose crown or abutment, and inflammation of the gum and bone around the implant that can cause bone loss.

In one review, about 3 out of 100 single-tooth implants were no longer in place after 5 years, and complications with the crown, such as chipping or loosening, were more frequent than failure of the implant itself.2

An implant that fails can often be removed and, after healing, replaced, but this means extra treatment. No one can promise that an implant will last for any number of years.

An implant is a minor operation with real risks, and good cleaning lowers them.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first single tooth implant appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit the dentist listens to your concerns, examines the gap, the neighbouring teeth, the gums and your bite, and looks at X-rays or a scan. You are told whether an implant is likely to suit you and what the options are. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Bring earlier dental X-rays and a list of your medicines, and tell the dentist about diabetes, smoking, heart conditions and any treatment of the jaw.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. You can bring a family member to share the decision. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

When one tooth is missing, the right question is what the neighbouring teeth and the bone will look like in ten years. An implant replaces the tooth and its root without touching the teeth beside it, and it keeps the bone working. It is not right for everyone, and I would rather tell you that at the first visit.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri

Dr. Revathi Indukuri reviewed this page as a dentist at the clinic. Her MDS in conservative dentistry and endodontics covers the root canal and tooth-saving treatment that is considered before any tooth is replaced. The clinic's team board lists a prosthodontist and implantologist, a periodontist and oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who plan and place implants.

Implant team under one roof

The team board lists a prosthodontist and implantologist, a periodontist and oral surgeons, so planning, surgery and the crown are done in one clinic.

Saving the tooth is considered first

If a tooth can be saved with a root canal and a crown, the dentist tells you before suggesting an implant.

A written plan before treatment

You receive a written plan before any treatment starts, so you know what is being done.

Honest about the alternatives

A bridge or a denture is explained alongside an implant, including the cases where they suit better.

13 Questions

Single tooth implant questions from patients in Kondapur

What is a single tooth implant?

It is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of one missing tooth, with an abutment and a crown above it. It stands alone and does not rely on the neighbouring teeth, which are left untouched.

How long does a single tooth implant take?

It is done in stages over several months. The post is placed first, the bone heals around it, and the crown is fitted after. The time depends on the bone, whether a graft is needed and how you heal. The team gives an estimate after the evaluation.

Is a single tooth implant painful?

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not sharp pain during placement. Soreness and swelling are common for a few days afterwards and are usually managed with the medicine the dentist prescribes.

How long does a single implant last?

No one can promise a number of years. In a systematic review, about 96.8 out of 100 implants were in place after 5 years, and about 94.5 out of 100 implant crowns. Cleaning, gum health, smoking and your bite all affect the result.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Each has strengths. An implant does not need the neighbouring teeth to be shaped and keeps the bone working, but it needs surgery and takes longer. A bridge is quicker and avoids surgery, but healthy teeth are cut to carry it. The dentist explains which suits you.

Can I get an implant if I have diabetes or smoke?

Possibly, but both raise the risk of the implant failing. Diabetes should be well controlled, and smoking should be stopped before and after placement. The dentist may talk with your doctor first.

How is the cost of a single tooth implant decided?

The cost is given after the evaluation and scan. The tooth position, any bone graft or tooth removal, the implant system, the crown material and the number of visits all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

What if I do not have enough bone?

A bone graft can sometimes rebuild the bone before or during the placement, adding time to the plan. If a graft is not possible or wanted, a bridge or a denture may be the better choice. A scan shows what is possible.

14 Second opinion

Missing a tooth and unsure what to replace it with?

Bring your X-rays and any earlier advice to your evaluation. The dentist will explain whether an implant, a bridge or another option suits you and why. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
