Dental Fillings in Kondapur, Hyderabad

A cavity is a hole that decay has worn into a tooth, and it does not heal by itself. It starts small and often causes no pain, then grows wider and deeper until it reaches the nerve. A filling stops it at the stage where the repair is still small.

Elite Dental Clinic is a dental clinic in Kondapur, Hyderabad. This page is medically reviewed by Dr. Revathi Indukuri, an endodontist whose MDS covers restoring and saving natural teeth. It explains how dental fillings in Kondapur work, the materials, the risks and when a bigger repair is needed.

Quick answer

A dental filling repairs a cavity by removing the decayed part of the tooth and filling the space with a material shaped to match the tooth. At Elite Dental Clinic in Hyderabad, a filling is planned after an examination and an X-ray, and most are done in one visit.

01 Overview

What is a dental filling and how does it repair a cavity?

Cavities form when bacteria in plaque make acids from the sugars you eat and drink. Plaque keeps those acids in contact with the tooth, the enamel slowly breaks down, and a cavity forms.2 Once the enamel has a hole, brushing cannot rebuild it.

A filling treats this by removing the decayed part of the tooth, cleaning the space and filling it with a material shaped to fit. The filling seals the hole so bacteria cannot get back in, and it restores the shape of the tooth for chewing.

The most common tooth-coloured material is a composite, a resin that is placed in the cavity and set with a light. Other materials include glass ionomer and amalgam, the silver-coloured filling. Where the damage is large, a crown may be advised instead of a filling.

Fillings are one of the most common dental treatments, and a cavity treated early needs the smallest repair. A cavity that is left can grow until it reaches the nerve, and then a root canal may be needed.

In short, a filling closes a cavity while the repair is still small and the tooth is still your own.

A white filling is tooth-coloured resin that is bonded to the tooth.

02 Candidacy

Who needs a dental filling in Kondapur?

Decay is often silent at the start, so only an examination and an X-ray show how far it has gone. The two lists below describe the general pattern.

Signs a tooth may need a filling

  • A visible hole, a dark spot or a rough area on a tooth
  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold food that fades within seconds
  • Food that keeps catching in one spot between two teeth
  • A chipped tooth, or an old filling that has cracked, worn down or come loose

Needs a bigger repair or a different plan

  • Pain that wakes you at night or lingers after hot or cold, which can mean the nerve is involved
  • Swelling of the gum near the tooth, or a pimple on the gum
  • So little tooth left that a filling would not hold it, where a crown is planned
  • Decay beneath an existing crown or a very large old filling

A short, sharp twinge points to a filling, and pain that lingers points to a bigger problem.

03 Options

Which filling material fits your tooth in Kondapur?

The choice depends on the tooth, the size of the cavity and where the filling sits. A Cochrane review found low-quality evidence that composite fillings in back teeth had a higher failure rate and more decay at their edges than amalgam, so the dentist weighs the material against your bite and your mouth.1

Composite filling

A tooth-coloured resin placed in layers and set with a light. It blends with the tooth and suits front and back teeth.

Usually 1 visit

Glass ionomer filling

A tooth-coloured material that bonds to the tooth. It suits areas near the gum line and small cavities away from heavy chewing.

Usually 1 visit

Larger repair: inlay, onlay or crown

For a cavity too big for a filling. The tooth is shaped and a piece made to fit is cemented in place. See dental crowns.

2 visits

If the problem is a chipped or gapped front tooth and not decay, dental bonding uses the same kind of material to change the shape of the tooth.

A filling keeps the most of your own tooth, and a bigger repair is for the tooth that a filling cannot hold.

04 Procedure

How is a cavity filled, step by step?

Most fillings are finished in one visit, and the length of the visit depends on the size and the position of the cavity. You are told the plan for your tooth at the first visit.

The decay comes out first, and the filling goes in only when the tooth is clean.

  1. Examination and X-ray of the tooth decay

The dentist looks at the tooth, checks it with an instrument and takes an X-ray, because decay between teeth or under old fillings cannot be seen in the mirror. You are told what was found and how big the repair will be.

  2. Local anaesthesia

The tooth and the gum are numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Tell the dentist if you feel any pain at any point.

  3. Removing the decay and shaping the cavity

The decayed part of the tooth is removed with a small drill or hand instruments, and the cavity is cleaned and shaped so the filling material can hold. The aim is to keep as much healthy tooth as possible.

  4. Placing the filling material

A composite filling is placed in thin layers and each layer is set with a light. A glass ionomer filling is placed and left to set. The material is shaped to match the tooth.

  5. Shaping the bite and polishing

The filling is trimmed and polished, and you bite on thin paper so the dentist can check that the filling is not too high. A high filling makes the tooth sore when you chew.

  6. Review and prevention advice

You are shown how to clean around the filling and how to prevent new cavities. Regular teeth cleaning and fluoride treatment lower the chance of decay.2

05 Cost

What decides the cost of dental fillings in Kondapur, Hyderabad?

Treatment is planned for one person, not sold as a product, so the cost follows your evaluation.

Two cavities that look alike on the surface can need very different repairs. For that reason Elite Dental Clinic does not quote a cost before an evaluation. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

What the evaluation looks at

  • How big and how deep the cavity is, and how many surfaces of the tooth it covers
  • Which tooth it is, and how hard it works when you chew
  • Whether decay has reached the nerve, which would need a root canal first
  • How many teeth need filling at the same visit

What you decide with the dentist

  • The filling material: composite, glass ionomer or another
  • Whether a larger repair such as a crown is the better plan
  • The timing of the visits around your work and travel

Your medical history matters too, including any allergies to materials or medicines.

The cost follows the plan, and the plan follows the evaluation.

06 Aftercare

What does recovery after a dental filling look like?

Most people return to routine activity at once. The numbness wears off within a few hours, and the tooth can feel different for a few days while it settles.

First few hours

The lip, tongue and cheek stay numb for a while. Wait until the feeling returns before you eat, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.

First week

The tooth can be sensitive to cold, heat or biting for a few days. Chew on the other side if it is sore, and brush and floss as usual, gently around the new filling.

First month

The sensitivity should fade. If the filling feels high, or the tooth hurts when you bite, ask the dentist to adjust it, because it takes only a few minutes.

Long term

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, limit snacking and attend regular cleanings and check-ups.2 New decay can start at the edge of a filling, so the gum line needs cleaning every day.

When to call us

Call the clinic the same day if the tooth aches by itself or wakes you at night, sensitivity gets worse after the first week, the filling comes out or breaks, or the gum near the tooth swells. See also tooth pain. If swelling spreads to your face or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Soreness settles in days, and the filling lasts longest when its edge is kept clean.

07 Limits

When is a dental filling the wrong choice?

A filling alone is usually not enough in these situations, and another plan is discussed:

  • Decay that has reached the nerve, shown by lingering or night pain, which needs a root canal before the tooth is restored.
  • So little healthy tooth left that a filling would break away, where a crown is planned instead.
  • A crack that runs into the root, which a filling cannot hold together.
  • An infection or swelling, which is treated before any filling is placed.
  • Gum bleeding that stops the tooth being kept dry at the gum line, until the gum is healthier.
  • Heavy untreated grinding, which wears and chips fillings, until it is managed.

If decay has reached the nerve, see root canal treatment.

Risks and complications

The main risks are sensitivity after the filling, a filling that chips, wears or comes out, decay starting again at the edge of the filling, and irritation of the nerve that can later need a root canal. Sensitivity usually fades within a few days or weeks.

Materials differ. A Cochrane review reported low-quality evidence that composite fillings in back teeth had higher failure rates and more decay at their edges than amalgam, and it found too little evidence to compare side effects.1

No filling lasts forever, and how long it lasts depends on its size, the material, your bite and how well you clean around it.

A filling is the right repair only when enough healthy tooth is left to hold it.

08 Your visit

What happens at your first dental filling appointment in Kondapur?

At the first visit Dr. Revathi Indukuri listens to your history, looks at the tooth and takes an X-ray. If a filling is the right repair, you are told the material choices and whether the filling can be done at the same visit. You receive a written plan that lists each stage before any treatment starts.

Tell the dentist which tooth is bothering you and what sets it off, such as cold, sweet food or biting. Bring any earlier X-rays and a list of your medicines.

The team speaks English, Telugu and Hindi. If the tooth is aching badly, call or send a WhatsApp message before you come, so that your visit can be planned. You are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.

The first visit ends with a plan, not a commitment.

Most cavities I treat are small, and a small cavity is a small filling. The ones that become root canals are usually the ones that waited. I would rather show you the X-ray early than explain a bigger repair later.

Dr. Revathi Indukuri

Dr. Revathi Indukuri completed her MDS in conservative dentistry and endodontics. Conservative dentistry is the branch that repairs decayed teeth and keeps as much natural tooth as possible, and endodontics covers the root canal treatment that a deep cavity can lead to.

Repairs that keep your own tooth

A filling is usually finished in one visit, so it suits a short stay well. Connect with the clinic on WhatsApp or by phone before you travel, and the team will help you plan your visit. If a tooth is aching, say so when you write.

Because decay can be deeper than it looks, allow a little extra time for a second visit in case the tooth needs a larger repair. The dentist tells you after the X-ray whether one visit will be enough.

Ask for your X-rays and a note of the material used before you leave, so that a dentist at home can check the filling later. The clinic is open every day from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and the team speaks English, Hindi and Telugu.

13 Questions

Dental filling questions from patients in Kondapur

Does getting a filling hurt?

The tooth and the gum are numbed with a local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. The tooth can be sensitive to cold, heat or biting for a few days afterwards. Tell the dentist if the filling feels high or the pain gets worse.

How long does a dental filling last?

No one can promise a number of years. It depends on the size of the filling, the material, your bite and how well you clean around it. New decay can start at the edge of a filling, so daily cleaning and regular check-ups matter.

What is the difference between composite and amalgam fillings?

Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that blends with the tooth. Amalgam is the silver-coloured filling. A Cochrane review reported low-quality evidence that composite fillings in back teeth failed more often and had more decay at the edges, so the choice depends on the tooth and your bite.

Why is my tooth sensitive after a filling?

Sensitivity to cold, heat or biting is common for a few days or weeks as the tooth settles. If the filling feels high, the dentist can adjust it in a few minutes. If the tooth aches by itself or the sensitivity gets worse, tell the clinic.

Do I need a filling for a small cavity?

A small cavity is easiest to treat, and it does not heal by itself. Only an examination and an X-ray show how deep it is. Treating it early usually means a smaller filling and less chance of a root canal later.

When do I need a crown or a root canal instead of a filling?

A crown is planned when too little healthy tooth is left to hold a filling. A root canal is planned when decay has reached the nerve, which often shows as lingering or night pain. The X-ray and the examination decide.

How is the cost of a dental filling decided?

Treatment is planned for one tooth and one person, so the cost is given after the evaluation. The size and depth of the cavity, the tooth, the material and the number of teeth all change the plan. You receive a written plan before treatment starts.

What should I do if a filling comes out?

Call the clinic the same day. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean, and do not fill the hole yourself. An open cavity can collect food and bacteria, and the tooth can become sensitive or painful.

14 Second opinion

Want a second opinion on your dental filling plan?

If you have been told you need several fillings, or a crown where you expected a filling, bring your X-rays and any written plan to your evaluation. The dentist will go through them with you and explain the options in plain words. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book your visit. The evaluation is the first step, and you are under no obligation to go ahead with treatment.
